About Me
I’m Laura Butterfield—born and raised in Medicine Hat, and deeply committed to seeing our city grow, thrive, and reach its full potential. I’m running for City Council to bring practical leadership, local insight, and a strong voice for residents and businesses alike.
For over 10 years, I worked directly for the City of Medicine Hat, where I gained firsthand experience with how municipal processes impact growth, development, and investment. I understand where the system works—and where it potentially holds us back.
Currently, I am the Senior Lead of Corporate Operations and Resourcing for the Canada division of a 200+ employee company operating across North America. In this role, I help manage strategic planning, workforce development, and operational efficiency to support the larger corporate objectives. I work closely with leadership to align resources with business goals, improve processes, and drive performance. This experience has given me a strong foundation in corporate governance, accountability, and results-driven decision making—skills I’m ready to bring my experience combined with my passion to City Council to help Medicine Hat operate more effectively and deliver better value to residents.
I’m passionate about creating opportunities, especially around development and encouraging growth. I want to support local businesses, attract new opportunities, and help Medicine Hat gain recognition as one of the best places in Canada to live and work.
While I’m focused on growth and progress, I also believe it’s just as important to protect the roots of what makes Medicine Hat special—our strong sense of community, our local businesses, and our unique quality of life. I want to ensure that as we grow, we stay true to the values, traditions, and small-city strengths that have always made Medicine Hat a great place to live, raise a family, and call home.
City Hall should work for the people—not get in their way. I’m ready to serve with common sense, accountability, and a focus on solutions. Let’s grow Medicine Hat—together.

Tax Relief to Encourage Growth
We need to make Medicine Hat more competitive by offering targeted tax incentives that attract investment, support local businesses, and encourage new development. Strategic tax relief can drive growth, create jobs, and boost our local economy—without adding pressure to existing taxpayers.
Clearing the Path for Growth
Offsite levies and complex regulations can slow down growth and drive investment elsewhere. I support removing development barriers and streamlining policies so it’s easier, faster, and more affordable to build in Medicine Hat. Let’s make City Hall a partner—not a roadblock—for responsible development.
Put Medicine Hat on the Map
Medicine Hat has so much to offer—but we need to tell our story better. I’ll advocate for stronger marketing and promotion of our city across Canada to attract businesses, families, and skilled workers. Let’s showcase Medicine Hat as a top destination to live, work, and grow.
